The moment a motorcyclist slams into a merging car – but who is in the wrong?

Dashcam footage that shows a motorcyclist slam into a car that was trying to switch lanes has split opinion on who is to blame for the accident.

The footage, which was originally posted by a Jarryd Powell on YouTube, went viral on Facebook when Dash Cam Owners Australia reposted it.

The vision shows the motorcycle driving down a busy road in Brisbane when it hits the blue vehicle’s rear end just as it switches lanes.

The vehicle attempts to turn left into what appears to be a petrol station.

The dashcam footage also shows the aftermath of the crash as the motorcyclist goes skidding down the road.

A woman is seen approaching to help the motorcyclist following the accident.

The video, which went viral on Dash Cam Owners Australia’s Facebook page, received mixed reactions from the public.

Some blamed the driver, saying that he or she should have looked in their rear-view mirrors before switching lanes.

‘Never even looked. Driver should face criminal charges and have their license taken off them for a year…’ a comment read.

‘Since when was it ever ok to turn left into a driveway from the middle lane. The car driver deserves to lose their licence permanently,’ another Facebook user said.

Others, however, defended the motorcyclist.

‘Bike wasn’t speeding (keeping up with traffic). Not weaving. Not splitting lanes. Car driver’s fault absolutely,’ a user commented.

‘Hate seeing an off, but as a bike rider it was obvious that the car was going to pull over. Keep your wits about you, and assume that every car wants to kill you. That’s how you survive’.

Some took aim at the motorcyclist, however. ‘Motorbike rider in the wrong? He was able to see what was in front of him and didn’t slow down enough…less dash cam more riding skills!’ one commented.

‘As a motorcyclist, I’d have been hitting the brakes at this point. It was obvious what might be about to happen’, said another.

Other viewers gave more balanced opinions.

‘The driver is at fault but you could see that car slowing down to change lanes, also ride in the rh side of lane so they can see you in mirror,’ One said.

‘The key to surviving is predictive and defensive riding (also applies to driving). BRAKES not HORN always!!!!!! Remember, you take control of the situation because they probably can’t see you’.
