British teenager trying to break record for cycling around the world has his bike stolen

A British teenager whose dream is to be the youngest person to cycle around the world alone has had his bike stolen while staying at a hostel in Australia.

Charlie Condell, from Bristol, was staying at a hostel in Townsville, Queensland on Tuesday when his bicycle, passport and camping gear were taken.

The 18-year-old, who has completed the European and Asian legs of his exhaustive task, has been left with only the clothes on his back just 100 days into his journey.

‘You can never quite believe it – I thought maybe someone had moved it at first.

‘But then I came to the sinking realisation that it was gone and I just had on my shirt and my board shorts and one bag,’ he told the BBC.

About $7,365AUD worth of cycling equipment was stolen, he estimated.

He was riding about 125 miles a day but has been forced to take a break while he finds a replacement bike.

He still plans to accomplish his goal by March. Once completed, he will have cycled 30,000km (18,000 miles).

‘It’s not going to stop me – once I get another bike, I’ll be off again,’ he said.

He will head to New Zealand next before tackling North America.
